Isaac Albeniz (1860-1909) - Spanish composer and pianist, one of the founders of the Spanish national school of music. He began his career as a child prodigy: already at the age of four he made his first public appearance in Barcelona ("he learned to read, seeing his name printed in large letters on the posters of his concerts"), at the age of ten he traveled with solo concerts throughout Spain. He studied with the best masters of Europe, including Franz Liszt, Felipe Pedrel, Vincent d'Andy, Gabriel Faure. Albeniz's music was highly appreciated by Claude Debussy.
"Music has never reached such a multifaceted, colorful perception; eyes close as if from the contemplation of too many paintings" (Debussy on the work of Albeniz).
The most important side of Albeniz's work is his appeal to Spanish folklore, to the "gold deposits of folk art": the composer began his wanderings in Spain early, saw Andalusia, traveled across the ocean, visited Argentina, Brazil, Cuba ...
Piano music occupies an important place in the work of Albeniz. An accomplished pianist, Albeniz wrote for the piano throughout his life. In Albeniz's pieces, one can often find the designation alla guitarra: he loved and appreciated guitar music, improvisations of folk guitarists - and skillfully translated the impression of the sound of the guitar into piano pieces.
The plays included in the collection were written in different years of life. The plays of the cycle "Spain" (1890) are among the most famous pieces of the composer.
The piano music of Isaac Albeniz has been performed by many outstanding pianists, as well as, in arrangements, by guitarists and violinists.
