Alexander Danilovich Kamensky (1900–1952) is one of the most prominent Russian pianists of the twentieth century. From early childhood he showed great musical abilities. In 1923 he graduated from the Petrograd Conservatory, piano class of L.V. Nikolaev, and also studied composition.
Kamensky's musical activity was vigorous. While still a student, he began teaching work, which he continued with short breaks until the end of his life (he taught at the Leningrad Conservatory from 1934). In addition, he organized music schools, worked in the Leningrad Hermitage as a curator of the sector of musical culture and technology, and wrote music. But he gained greatest fame as a concert pianist, a brilliant musician with an unusually extensive repertoire. In addition to his excellent technique, critics noted the variety of his touches, colorful sound, and subtle pedaling. He continued his performances in besieged Leningrad, maintaining the spirit of the city’s defenders in incredibly difficult conditions. During this period he gave more than 500 concerts!
Kamensky became especially famous as a tireless propagandist of modern music, recognized as its best interpreter in Russia. He constantly presented listeners with new works by domestic and foreign composers: Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Shcherbachev, Popov, Deshevov, Schoenberg, Ravel, Szymanowski, Stravinsky, Honegger, Milhaud, Poulenc and many others.
An important place in his creative activity was occupied by the creation of concert transcriptions of symphonic and vocal works, fragments from operas and ballets. These pieces, reflecting the wealth of imagination, musical subtlety and pianistic skill of Kamensky, were performed by him himself with great success, and they were also played by other pianists. Among such works is the published transcription of Polovtsian dances, a fragment of which (Dance of Polovtsian Girls) was published in 1928, and the whole of it in 1981 in the collection "Fragments from Operas of Russian Composers".
