A talented violinist and composer Aloysius Ludwig Minkus, a Czech by nationality (according to other sources - Polish), was born in Vienna, where he obtained his musical education. Since 1853 he lived in St. Petersburg, where he led the house orchestra of Prince Yusupov, was a violinist of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, the Moscow theater music supervisor. Professor of the Moscow Conservatory (1866-1872). From 1871 to 1886 years - "regular ballet composer" at the Directorate of Imperial Theaters in St. Petersburg. In 1886 Minkus left Russia. As a composer Minkus debuted in Paris in 1864, with the ballet "Paquita." Expert in ballet, Minkus wrote very comfortable for dance, illustrative and melodic theater music.
Among the numerous ballets written by the composer, the most popular were "Paquita" (1864), "Don Quixote" (1871), "Butterfly" (1874), "La Bayadere" (1876), "Roxanne" (1877).
