The book by the outstanding American harpsichordist and musicologist Ralph Kirkpatrick is a fundamental study of the work of the brilliant Italian composer of the 18th century, Domenico Scarlatti, a contemporary of Bach and Handel (all three were born in 1685).
Published in the USA in 1953, it still remains the most detailed study of the composer's work, his era, the musical life of Italy, Portugal and Spain at the end of the 17th - the first half of the 18th century, the countries where Scarlatti spent his life. The first - historical - chapters draw the circumstances and pictures of this life, completely unknown to the Russian-speaking reader. These chapters read like a fascinating historical novel. Actually, the musicological chapters of the book are extremely important for every musician who wants to penetrate into the essence and features of Scarlatti's completely original and original musical language, revealing the secrets of his performing skills. The book contains a catalog of Scarlatti's sonatas, which has become universally recognized in world musical (scientific and concert) practice.
Kirkpatrick's work is on a par with such fundamental studies in the field of musicology as "Mozart" by Hermann Abert and "Bach" by Albert Schweitzer. Translation from English was made by Alexander Evgenievich Maykapar. Alexander Evgenievich Maykapar is a famous Russian harpsichordist, organist and pianist, Honored Artist of Russia, author of a number of works on musicology. Along with preparing for publication a translation of R. Kirkpatrick's book, he performed in concert an anthology of Scarlatti's harpsichord sonatas, which included 200 of his 555 sonatas.
