David Popper (1843–1913) was a Czech cellist and composer, one of the greatest musicians of his time. His biography is worth dedicating a separate book to: playing in the best ensembles and best orchestras of the 19th century, vibrant tours throughout Europe and Russia, teaching at the Budapest Conservatory.
The composer penned many works written for cello. We present to your attention the second book of plays by David Popper, which includes four works: "The Butterfly", "French Country Song", "Elegy" and "The Spinning Wheel".
The last of these pieces are brilliantly programmed and virtuosic. There are no truly dramatic episodes to be found in them - everything is aimed at an external (and therefore no less impressive) stage effect: rapid pace, etude technique of the highest order, brilliant passages. Perhaps, all the capabilities of the instrument are realized here (let alone the capabilities of the student, whose reference point will be the brilliant playing of Rostropovich, one of the most famous performers of the virtuoso Popper).
But the core of the notebook consists of plays of a completely different kind. Here, at its core, it is just the same melodious, "legata" cello. The tempo of the plays is not fast; in the foreground now there are either village lyrics ("French Country Song") or an artless Slavic tune (Elegy).
