In Russia, for the first time, the famous "Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic patterns" by Nikolai Slonimsky was published in Russian and English.
Domestic musicians have been waiting for this event for almost 70 years.
Thesaurus means treasury, treasure, store. It has been used in linguistics for a long time: this is the name of dictionaries in which words, phraseological units and idiomatic expressions of a language are presented as fully as possible.
The idea of creating a similar musical dictionary was brilliantly realized by the outstanding American musicologist, conductor, pianist, composer, lexicographer Nikolai Slonimsky (1894, St. Petersburg - 1995, Los Angeles), who in the spring of 1947 released "Thesaurus of scales and melodic patterns. A reference book for musicians - composers and performers."
In the book "Absolute Pitch: A Life Story," with his characteristic humor, Nikolai Slonimsky describes the difficult path of his great work to the minds and hearts of musicians: ...during the first months after the publication of the Thesaurus, NOT A SINGLE COPY was sold. And suddenly the incredible happened: jazz musicians began to buy it, realizing that it was a bottomless well from which they could draw material for their improvisations and cadences.
Since then, the Thesaurus of Nikolai Slonimsky has gone through many reprints in different languages, and has found a lively response from outstanding composers of the twentieth century - A. Schoenberg, A. Onneger, P. Hindemith, R. Malipiero, E. Kshenek, G. Cowell, A. Copland, including composer, multi-instrumentalist, rock star F. Zappa...
Now "Thesaurus" ("Treasury") by Nikolai Slonimsky is available to Russian musicians - composers, musicologists, performers, students of music universities...
We hope that this work will experience no less of a boom in Russia.
