The proposed dictionary is designed for a reader who is sufficiently musically educated theoretically and practically. As the name suggests, it is devoted only to the key terms of music as a pitch system and does not contain background information about music in general and initial information about the elements of the musical system (such as note, scale or major).
In this dictionary, when defining terms, the provisions of Russian music theory are taken as a basis - mainly the St. Petersburg (Leningrad) school. The range of concepts under consideration is limited to the area of the pitch system, associated mainly with the theory of mode and musical texture. In accordance with this setting, terms related to such composing methods as dodecaphony, seriality, aleatorics, minimalism, repeatability, etc., are not considered in the dictionary, since these techniques do not relate to the logic of the intonation formation of music, but only to the technique of writing.
